AI Told Him He Qualified for a Rate That Never Existed. He Lost the House.
He lost the house over a number a machine made up, and he still does not fully believe it was not real. This is what happens when you let artificial intelligence play loan officer. I am a real estate agent, not your lender, so this is what I watched happen, not mortgage advice. For that, you call a real lender.
The Short Version
- He asked AI what loan programs he qualified for and what his rate would be. It answered with total confidence.
- The program, the terms, and the rate were not current. Some of it may never have existed as described.
- He shopped at a price that only worked if the machine was right, found the home, wrote the offer, and lost it.
- AI would rather give a confident wrong answer than admit it does not know. That is the danger.
- Use AI to learn what to ask a lender. Never let it tell you what you qualify for.
He asked the robot instead of a lender
Smart guy, the type who researches everything before he buys a toaster. Getting ready to buy his first place. Instead of calling a lender first, he opened the machine and started asking about loans. What programs do I qualify for. What will my rate be.
And the machine, in those clean confident sentences it loves, told him about a down payment assistance program. Named a percentage. Told him he likely qualified. Told him roughly what his rate could look like. He believed it, because it did not hedge. It said it like it was reading off a screen at the bank.
The Liar
Here is the problem. The program, the income limits, the rate, the way the machine described all of it, none of it was current. Some of it had changed. Some I am not convinced ever existed in that form. This is what I call the Liar. Not because the machine is evil, but because made up and certain reads better to it than honest and unsure.
It would rather give you a confident wrong answer than tell you it does not know. And that confidence is exactly what fools a careful person.
The machine will never tell you it does not know. That is not a feature. That is the danger.
How it cost him the house
He built his whole plan around that number. Set his budget on it. Went house hunting at a price that only works if the rate and the program are real. Found the place. Wrote the offer. Emotionally all the way in.
Then he finally talked to an actual lender, who pulled up reality. Different rate. Different qualification. The assistance program did not work the way the robot said. His real numbers put him tens of thousands under where he had been shopping. The house was gone. Not because he could not afford a home, but because he let a chatbot tell him a story.
The trap, and the fix
When the real lender gave him the real numbers, his first instinct was that the lender was lowballing him, because the robot had been so confident. That is the trap. The machine sounds more sure than the human who is actually right, and your gut starts trusting confidence over accuracy.
The fix costs nothing. It is fine to ask AI what questions should I ask a lender, what does PMI mean, what is the difference between these two loans. That is the machine at its best, leveling you up before the conversation. The second you let it tell you what you qualify for, you have handed your biggest financial decision to the one party in the deal that owes you nothing and can invent things with a straight face.
Using AI for the words and a human for the decision is the whole game. If you want help putting AI to work in your Santa Clarita home sale, your business, or just learning to use it without getting burned, that is exactly what we do.

Can AI tell me what mortgage I qualify for?
No. AI does not have access to current loan programs, rates, or your real financial picture, and it will state outdated or invented details with total confidence. Only a licensed lender pulling your actual numbers can tell you what you qualify for. Use AI to prepare your questions, not to get your answer.
Why does AI give wrong financial information so confidently?
Because these systems are built to produce a fluent, confident answer, and a made-up certain answer often reads better to the model than an honest I do not know. That makes AI dangerous for anything with real money on the line, like rates, qualification, and contract terms.
What is a safe way to use AI when getting a mortgage?
Use it to learn the vocabulary and build a list of sharp questions for real lenders, so you can compare loans like an expert. Then take those questions to actual licensed lenders and let them give you the real numbers.
