I Built mphant: Portable AI Memory That Follows You Between ChatGPT and Claude

Every AI you talk to forgets you the second you close the tab. You spend ten minutes telling ChatGPT who you are, what you are building, how you want to be talked to. Then you switch to Claude and you start over from zero. The smartest tools ever built have the memory of a goldfish. I got tired of it, so I built the fix. It is called mphant, it is live today, and it is free.

The demo that makes people stop

Here is the whole thing in fifteen seconds. In ChatGPT I say: remember I like Python with type hints, I am building a company called Northwind, and I always want the trade-offs, not just an answer. It saves that to my vault.

Then I close ChatGPT and open Claude. Different company, different AI. I say load my context. And Claude opens with: you are building Northwind, you like Python with type hints, you want trade-offs, where do you want to start. I never told Claude any of that. It read my memory file. One file, that I own, that every AI can read.

Tell one AI who you are. Open a different one. It already knows.

Why the billion-dollar labs will not build this

Here is the part that matters. Why does this not already exist? The labs are worth trillions. They could have shipped it years ago. They did not, and they will not, and here is the honest reason: your memory is the moat. OpenAI will never help you carry your context to Claude. Anthropic will never help you carry it to ChatGPT. The thing that keeps you from leaving is the thing they remember about you.

I am not mad at them for it. That is the game. But somebody has to be neutral. So I built mphant to be neutral on purpose. The Switzerland of AI memory. It belongs to no lab. It belongs to you.

Is it safe?

Before anyone asks: yes, it is encrypted. AES-256, the same standard that protects banks. Your memory lives as one encrypted file on your machine, not in somebody else's cloud. It syncs between your own devices as an encrypted blob, so even when it is moving, nobody can read it but you. Your passphrase never leaves your hands. I spent two decades in a job where a careless detail got people hurt. I do not play games with private information.

The bigger point

Here is my real take, and some people are not going to like it. Three years from now, my AI does not remember me is going to sound as dumb as my phone does not have the internet. Portable memory is not a feature. It is a right. You should own what the machine learns about you, the same way you own your photos and your contacts. We all just quietly agreed to rent it instead. I am done renting.
